Clinical Trials…

This entry is part 5 of 10 in the series How Science Works

I have mentioned clinical trials before and this video describes the process nicely. There is also a bit of history in there too – useful if you want to know why the Brits are known as Limeys in certain parts of the world. It was produced by the European Union before the Brexit vote (I think I first posted it here in 2015). It is quite topical because recent vaccines have been through this process prior to being made available to the public.

Questions…

  1. What is meant by a fair test?
  2. What name is given to an inert substance used as a control in some clinical trials?
  3. Why are patients put into groups at random?
  4. Why do the best clinical trials use large numbers of patients?
  5. To what broad group of compounds does cholesterol belong?
