Force – a force is a push or a pull
gravity/weight – the force of attraction between all matter in the Universe (Fgrav)
magnetism – the force of attraction or repulsion between magnets
electrical – the force of attraction or repulsion between charged particles
voltage – the electromotive force pushing electrons around a circuit
friction – a force that opposes motion (often causes heating) (Ffrict)
air resistance – the frictional effects of an object moving through the air (Fair)
water resistance – the frictional effects of an object moving through the water (Fwater)
upthrust – the force that holds up a floating object (either in water or air)
normal – the support force on an object that is resting on a solid surface (Fnorm)
applied – the force exerted on an object by a person or machine pushing it (Fapp)
tension – the force transmitted through a string or wire pulled tight between two objects (Ftens)
spring – the force exerted by a stretched or compressed spring (or other elastic material) (Fspring)
Pressure – the force acting over a given area, measured in N/cm2
Terminal velocity – the maximum speed achieved by a falling object
Energy – the ability of a system to do work by converting between forms of energy. Energy cannot be made or destroyed, it can only be converted from one form to another.
potential energy – stored energy
gravitational P.E. – the energy stored in an object lifted up off the ground
chemical P.E. – the energy stored in chemicals such as food, fuel & explosives
elastic P.E. – the energy stored in stretched or compressed materials
kinetic E. – the energy possessed by a moving object
thermal E. – the energy particles have because of their temperature
sound E. – changes in pressure in air (or water) that can be interpreted by our ears as sounds
light E. – a visible form of electromagnetic radiation (which also includes radio waves and x-rays)
electrical E. – a versatile form of energy that can be changed into most other forms of energy
Transducer – a device that converts energy from one form into another
Fossil fuel – a fuel produced from the fossilised remains of dead plants and animals
coal – formed from fossilised trees buried under layers of rock millions of years ago
oil – fuel formed from the fossilised remains of dead aquatic invertebrate animals. It is a complex mixture of many different hydrocarbon compounds
natural gas – colourless, odourless methane gas released by decomposing plants and animals
Density – the mass of 1 cm3 of a substance
mass – how much matter a substance is made from
volume – the amount of space an object takes up (or the capacity of a container)
