We’ve Been Building Rockets…

My favourite time of the summer term is when the scholarship exams are over, the Winchester entrances are done and Fifth Form and I can settle down to the important business of rocket building. The machines are black powder fuelled and reach 300 metres or so in a remarkably short time. They are sometimes constructed from super light materials and precision glued for maximum acceleration and on other occasions we make them from A4 paper, pritt stick, blu-tac, sellotape and chopped up plastic pipettes. The latter are my favourites because they leave lots of room for imaginative aerodynamics and cool sponsorship logos. There are a couple of pictures below to give you the idea but do visit the site again to see some video footage of launches and expert parachute descents.

A fine example using A4 paper and sellotape...
Sleek and elegant with a neatly shaped nose cone...
Designed for speed...
Sponsored to the max...
Ready for launch...
I need a more responsive camera for the action shots...
