SciShow…

I found a new science-based YouTube channel called SciShow – I don’t know how it managed to stay under the radar for so long. I suspect that there is just a lot of choice out there. One of the first videos I saw was about blood colour. I think I may have perpetuated the myth that blood is blue when deoxygenated (carboxylated) and red when oxygenated. In my mind, I think I opted for the more modest “blood is darker in veins than in arteries” but perhaps I am fooling myself. Someone I have taught will probably be able to tell me what message I have put across. In any case, my core mantra is to “try to believe as many true things as possible and disbelieve as many false things as possible” so with this in mind I have posted the video below to clarify the position.

.

And since I will be talking genetics with the fifth form, and using eye colour as an example of a physical characteristic that is controlled by a complementary pair of alleles, I should post their video on blue eyes as well.

.

I am heading back to England tomorrow – tempus fugit!
