Radley…

I had a good time at the Radley Prep School’s Science Day yesterday. It is always a good opportunity to talk to other prep school science teachers and to talk to the people who may be teaching you in the future. We spent some time talking about the chemistry CE paper, and CE in general, with the man responsible for coordinating the exam writing process. Then the Head of Science at Radley started a discussion about online resources.

This was one of the rare occasions where I thought I might have something relevant to share! I have promoted www.mikecurtis.org.uk (or SupaScience as it used to be known) to all of my candidates keen to do some work over the holidays. It has the whole CE syllabus beautifully wrapped up and presented with diagrams, practice questions and a science dictionary too.

I started this blog to share things I found on the Internet (YouTube usually) and also to open up a discussion outside lessons. I read a number of blogs and subscribe to podcasts, Twitter  and YouTube channels so I am being constantly updated with science news items. My idea was to filter out the ones that are interesting, shocking or funny and put them here. Of course, now that Khan Academy exists anyone can extend their education online without the need for the likes of me!

This site can also point you in the direction of some commercial sites of interest. We currently subscribe to www.doddlelearn.co.uk which has lessons, revision exercises, tests and downloadable content. It stores your scores online and tracks your progress too. www.twig-prep.com is a collection of 1500 film clips covering the science syllabus but also much of the geography and maths syllabus too. Thanks to the meeting at Radley I have been having a play with www.socrative.com and have set my first online quiz which I hope to try out later today. Showing my site off to the assembled intelligentsia on Monday I was struck by how unattractive the blog looked (it always looks beautiful on a huge iMac screen!) so I am thinking that I need a bit of a redesign. Any advice gratefully received!
