Magnetic Menace…

Another Thunderfoot video, but this time about one of the early ‘battles of science’ during the 2nd World War. It is a longish watch but stick at it. He eventually builds a working, kitchen-table experiment to show how the British finally neutralised the threat. It also raises lots of simple scientific ideas that I will quiz you about lower down the page.

Questions…

  1. Apart from its low density, why else is the detonator built from aluminium?
  2. V2 uses ethanol and liquid oxygen as fuel. What waste products would you expect it to produce as it burns?
  3. What was Sun Tzu’s famous book on the philosophy and strategy of warfare called?
  4. Why does water with salt dissolved in it conduct electricity, whilst pure water does not?
  5. What is the unit of electric current?
