I went to the Boxing Day meet of the Avon Vale Hunt in Lacock yesterday; much as I did last year. The Daily Mail has a splendid photo of the meet in which you might spot a Summerfieldian.
It was quite an interesting day because last week the RSPCA successfully prosecuted the Heythrop Hunt for hunting foxes with dogs. The Heythrop Hunt pleaded guilty and was fined.
I was interested in the comments of Gavin Grant, the Chief Executive of the RSPCA. He is reported to have said,
“Those who get a kick out of it, those who consciously abuse animals for profit or for pleasure – they are the enemies of the animals, and that makes them the enemies of the RSPCA.”
“A civilisation is judged on how it treats the weakest — animals have no vote, no voice, no choice. A fox can’t take the Heythrop hunt to the courts, we can.”
Mr Grant insisted that foxhunting could not be likened to fishing or pheasant shooting because foxes “know full well what’s happening” during their final moments. [from The Telegraph]
Things for consideration…
- What do you make of his arguments?
- Whether you agree or disagree with hunting, do you think his arguments are sound?
- Can you spot any rhetorical tricks/logical fallacies?
