Plant Cells v Animal Cells

biology
This entry is part 5 of 5 in the series Cell Structure

It would be very helpful if you could draw a labelled diagram of a typical animal cell and of a typical plant cell. You probably won’t be asked to draw one in an exam but knowing that you can will give you the confidence to answer questions about cells. Everything above should be fairly familiar except perhaps for ‘ribosomes’. These are the tiny organelles within plant and animal cells that carry out the protein-making work as dictated by the cell’s genes. They take the genetic code and link together amino acids in the correct order to make the required protein.

Questions

  1. For what does a gene code?
  2. What job is performed by chloroplasts?
  3. Mitochondria are responsible for respiration. What are the raw materials for aerobic respiration?
  4. From what organic molecule is a plant’s cell wall made?
  5. From what are proteins made?
  6. The cell membrane is semi-permeable. What does semi-permeable mean?
